Zack Snyder to Direct “Justice League” Movie
In news that will come as a surprise to no-one whatsoever, it seems that all of our hopes / fears (delete as appropriate) with respect to the DC Universe have now been officially confirmed; Justice League is happening, and Zack Snyder will be at the helm.
In an article for the Wall Street Journal, reporter Ben Fritz writes:
“First came Man of Steel. Next up is Batman vs. Superman. And then, Justice League.
Confirming the studio’s plans for a movie based on its iconic super-team for the first time, Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman said the studio has set plans to make a Justice League movie.
Like Man of Steel and its follow-up, which starts production next month, Justice League will be directed by Zack Snyder. Henry Cavill is expected to return as Superman, along with Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, who play Batman and Wonder Woman, respectively, in 2016’s Man of Steel sequel tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman.
“It will be a further expansion of this universe,” said Mr. Silverman. “Superman vs Batman will lead into Justice League.”
A script is still in development and Warner has not set a release date, though the movie is unlikely to come out before 2018. Mr. Silverman would not comment on what other heroes might join Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in the movie. However the studio has recently been casting the role of Cyborg, a half-robotic hero who is expected to have a cameo in Batman vs. Superman and then appear in “Justice League.” Other DC heroes who have been in Justice League comic books include Aquaman, Flash and Green Lantern.”
So, what do we think? For me, Hack Snyder’s (yes, that typo was intentional; I know, I’m so witty…) Man of Steel was one of the worst films of last year so the news that he has been entrusted with DC’s answer to The Avengers fills me with dread. Nonetheless, this is a huge project so Warner Bros must at least have some confidence that he can deliver.
However, what worries me most about this project isn’t Snyder or the fact that Man of Steel was so awful, but that it all seems to have been rushed into place with little forward-planning and no ultimate aim. Where Marvel took the time to introduce individual characters, Warner Bros / DC are introducing them two or three at a time, presumably in a bid to catch-up with the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Though Batman had a good run in Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy, everything we’ve been told about his appearance in the as yet untitled Batman vs Superman film suggests that Affleck‘s take on the character will be far removed from that of Christian Bale. If this is the case, the audience deserves some time to get to know this new interpretation of the character before he’s thrown into a Justice League movie, which will also feature, at the absolute least, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. That, above all else, is my main concern.
There’s a lot of potential in a Justice League movie but I’m fearful that none of it will be properly realised. What about you guys though? Are you anxious, excited or both? Let me know in the box below! =)
They had confidence he’d deliver with “Man of Steel”. What has their confidence that he’ll deliver got to do with it?
Still, my favourite Zack Snyder is still “Watchmen”. The director’s cut is pretty fantastic. I think Snyder just needs someone good to write the material for him and clearly the adaptation of Watchmen was written pretty damn well.
Man of Steel however, was written by David S. Goyer.
Justice League (seriously, why couldn’t they just make “Batman vs Superman” like they promised?) will be written by David S. Goyer again, only with Zack Snyder (writer of “Suckerpunch”) co-writing. Oh great. *facepalm*
So once again it will look beautiful and be complete and utter tripe….
Well he failed to deliver with Man of Steel (in terms of quality anyway), yet still they’re giving him two additional shots. He must offer them something that they like (besides financial gain)
I actually dislike all of Snyder’s films. To me his career has been one of consistently diminishing returns; Dawn of the Dead was alright (though not great) and everything after it has slowly gotten worse.
